Scottish Thistle Awards National Final 2023
Corks are popping across the South of Scotland as the region celebrates a sensational performance at the national Scottish Thistle Awards for the tourism and hospitality sector – businesses from Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders scooped six national awards at Friday’s glitzy ceremony in Glasgow, smashing the previous regional record of three and making the South of Scotland the most successful region on the night.
The six winning businesses’ achievements are now set to be recognised by the South of Scotland Destination Alliance (SSDA) with guest of honour status at their next annual conference, being held in Dumfries on 20 March 2024.
The South of Scotland triumphed in the following categories at the Scottish Thistle Awards 2023:
Best Bar or Pub
Cross Keys Inn
Bringing the Cross Keys Inn back to life has been a hugely rewarding experience and we are thrilled to be recognised in this way. This Thistle Award is testament to the passion and enthusiasm of our team who work brilliantly to keep the pub at the heart of our community.

Sponsored by The Macallan Estate this award celebrates businesses bringing luxury to the Scottish visitor experience. The self-catering accommodation is located in the heart of the Scottish Borders sleeping 32 guests in total within one large house, two glamping pods and four lodges. Judges commended the family business for their strong community engagement and fair employment, that they said will help ‘inspire other businesses in the Scottish tourism industry.
Tourism Individual of the Year
Melanie Allen
Melanie Allen, proprietor of Nithbank Country Estate in Dumfries & Galloway, took home the Tourism Individual of the Year award, sponsored by HIT Scotland, in recognition of the positive impact she has made on the visitor experience at a regional and national level in Scotland.
The Silver Thistle Award
Wilma and David Finlay
Wilma and David Finlay received the prestigious Silver Thistle Award which recognises an individual or individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to tourism over many years. The couple are partners in family farm Rainton Farm in Dumfries & Galloway – home of The Ethical Dairy. They also built up a successful food product range and visitor attraction at Cream o’ Galloway that they recently retired from and sold.
Described as ‘pioneers in ethical agricultural techniques,’ they were also groundbreaking in adopting the early principles of responsible tourism within their business, bringing benefits to the wider community and visitor economy.

Huge congratulations to everyone who entered the 2023 inaugural South of Scotland Thistle Awards. The South produced such a quality of applications that the independent judges from across Scotland were deeply impressed by the extremely high calibre produced by our region.
For almost 30 years, The Scottish Thistle Awards have been recognising and championing the very best of the Scottish tourism, hospitality and events industry. The Awards honour the very best individuals, businesses and partnerships for their innovation, excellence and success. To have our own event in the South of Scotland is another significant milestone in recognising and celebrating what we have here.
The evening at the Cairndale Hotel on the 5th October was an opportunity to recognise all our finalists and celebrate our winners. We look forward to cheering you on as you represent the South of Scotland region at the National Finals in Glasgow on Friday 1st December 2023.

Airhouses offers quality, luxury, self catering experiences in the heart of the Scottish Borders countryside.
The accommodation sleeps 32 guests in total over one large house for 10, two glamping pods (sleeps 2) and four lodges of varying sizes sleeping 2,4 and 6 people.
It's situated on farmland that has been in the family for 37 years, with 17 years of running the self-catering properties.
